Building a Sustainable Outdoor Bathroom Cabin from Bamboo

At Hacienda Guadua Bamboo, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it’s a way of life. One of our latest projects—a bamboo outdoor bathroom cabin—exemplifies how bamboo can transform everyday needs into eco-friendly, functional, and beautiful solutions. This innovative project, featuring a composting toilet, is a game-changer for rural farms without access to running water. Through a step-by-step photo gallery, we want to inspire others to rethink waste management and showcase the potential of bamboo as a building material.

Why a Composting Toilet?

The composting toilet is at the heart of this project. Unlike traditional latrines, which often smell bad and attract flies, our composting toilet system is odorless, hygienic, and effective. It turns human waste into rich compost, perfect for fertilizing farm crops. This alternative eliminates the need for water while contributing to soil health—a win-win for farms and the environment.

The Bamboo Bathroom Design

The bathroom cabin was designed with simplicity and functionality in mind, using bamboo grown and treated on our farm. The natural aesthetics of bamboo blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, while its strength and durability ensure the structure will last for decades.

The project required minimal resources:

  • Material: Locally grown Guadua Bamboo.

  • Team: One bamboo building expert and three enthusiastic locals from our village who were eager to learn bamboo construction.

Groundwork and Foundation

The team begins by tracing the construction area and digging trenches for the foundation. Brick walls are then constructed within the trenches, not only to elevate the floor but also to form the composting chambers essential for the toilet system. The remaining space is filled with dirt, which is compacted to ensure stability before pouring a smooth concrete floor. This sturdy foundation provides the perfect base for our outdoor bamboo bathroom cabin.

Bamboo Construction

Treated Guadua Bamboo® Poles form the sturdy frame, showcasing their natural strength and aesthetic appeal. For the ceiling cover, Flattened Guadua Bamboo® Mats were used, adding a touch of elegance while serving a functional purpose. These mats act as excellent natural insulators, reducing indoor temperatures by up to 8 degrees Celsius—an invaluable feature in Colombia’s tropical climate.

Finishing Touches

The final stages of construction, as seen in the photo gallery, showcase the attention to detail that brings the bamboo bathroom cabin to life. The walls are crafted using metal mesh and mortar, creating a strong and weather-resistant surface. To enhance ventilation and aesthetics, intricate latticework made from Guadua Bamboo® Slats is installed, adding a touch of traditional craftsmanship. Finally, the entire bamboo structure is treated with a special UV-resistant oil, which not only enhances the natural beauty of the bamboo but also extends its lifespan by protecting it from the elements. These finishing touches ensure the cabin is not only functional but also visually stunning and built to last.

Empowering Local Communities

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was the collaboration with three locals from our village. Though they started as novices in bamboo construction, their eagerness to learn led to remarkable progress. By the end of the project, they had mastered key bamboo joinery techniques and were hired full-time to join our team.

Impact and Inspiration

This bamboo bathroom isn’t just a functional facility for our visitors and employees; it’s a model for sustainable living. It proves that composting toilets can be an effective and low maintenance solution for water-scarce areas and showcases bamboo as a renewable building material.
